We don’t have to remind you that Valentines Day is round the corner. Whether you’ve been together for 20 years (or 20 minutes), there’s no denying that choosing the perfect Valentines gift comes with a certain amount of pressure and expectation. This year, who not choose a memorable gift you can both enjoy? At SOS we have a special couples massage room in which you can share together any of our massage treatments in intimate luxury.
And so, in this blog, we’ve put together some of our favourite massages. With something for everyone (and couples gaining 15%* off the cost when booking our couples massage room), it’s time to start deciding what you’ll choose.
The original and probably the best for first timers, Swedish massage uses softer strokes on the bonier and more delicate parts of the body, and stronger strokes where there is thicker muscle coverage. This adjustment of pressure makes it an ideal massage for relaxation. The five main techniques used in Swedish massage are stroking and gliding, kneading, rubbing, tapping and vibration.
Besides the calming benefits, Swedish massage is thought to be good for easing muscular strain by flushing out toxins, improving circulation by increasing oxygen flow in the blood, helping to keep ligaments and tendons supple and reducing emotional and physical stress.

Deep tissue massage
Deep tissue massage is similar to Swedish massage but it applies greater pressure and tension, and focuses on posterior (deeper) muscles. Commonly used to treat chronic aches and pains and tension in the neck, back and shoulders, deep tissue massage is an intense but effective treatment.
It uses a mix of classic massage strokes with increased manipulation. Deep Tissue Massage can specifically help to treat chronic back pain, relieve high blood pressure, reduce stress, anxiety and muscle tension, break up scar tissue and improve recovery and performance.
Aromatherapy massage is Swedish massage therapy using massage oil or lotion that contains essential oils (highly concentrated plant oils). During an aromatherapy massage, you inhale these essential oil molecules or absorb them through your skin. They are thought to promote beneficial changes in your mind and body by affecting the limbic system, a region of the brain known to influence the nervous system.
Benefits include better circulation, stress relief, increased energy levels, promotion of better sleep, strengthening of the immune system and enhanced mental awareness.
Aroma hot stone massage
Aroma hot stone massage combines relaxing warmth and refreshing coolness to encourage body to detox and heal. This also increases lymph flow, boosts circulation and energy levels and helps flush out waste. Heat relaxes and calms your body quickly, so your therapist can focus on a deep working of the tissues using both hot stones and hand strokes.
Hot stones increase your sense of relaxation and calm. They are coated in fragrant oil which is smoothed gently onto your body, and each stone in turn is worked by your therapist’s hands. Importantly, it can improve rheumatic and arthritic conditions.
Sports massage is designed to correct problems and imbalances in soft tissue caused from repetitive and strenuous physical activity and trauma. However, you don’t have to be an athlete to benefit from a sports massage, which helps to prevent injury and hastens the healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons. It can be particularly beneficial for people with injuries, chronic pain or a restricted range of motion.
Sports massage has many benefits for anyone doing regular exercise including relaxing muscles, reducing fatigue, relieving swelling around joints and boosting circulation. All this improves your immune system, to promote healing. Sports massage also improves flexibility and body strength, increases circulation and lymph flow, and reduces the likelihood of injury by getting rid of muscle tension.

Or if you fancy something different…
Tui Na is a therapeutic Chinese massage using various manipulation methods according to the meridian and collateral theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Tui Na is regarded alongside herbal medicine and acupuncture as another one of the main forms of treatment of traditional Chinese medicine. Similar to acupuncture, it is also based on the meridian and collateral theories. Instead of needles, different manipulation methods are used to treat a range of health problems similar to those for acupuncture. It is especially helpful for musculoskeletal conditions.

Reflexology is a deeply calm and relaxing treatment. It is a complementary therapy, which works on the principal that points on one part of the body will correspond to a body part somewhere else. These areas are arranged in such a way form a map of the body in the feet. Stimulating these areas (mainly in the feet) can treat various problems throughout the body as a whole.
Reflexology is a wonderful stress reliever. Among other things, the treatment promotes a deep feeling of calm and relaxation, while melting away tension, lifting your mood and rebalancing the body.
