Cosmetic enhancements – what to treat and where

The term ‘cosmetic procedure’ can sound pretty daunting, but it’s a sphere of the beauty world that is undeniably growing. Once the go-to for just the rich and famous, cosmetic enhancements via Botox or Dermal Fillers are now an every-day aspect of many salon’s offerings. Whether it’s something you are keen to try, or you are just intrigued to know more about, read to find out what you can treat from the comfort of your local salon, without having to go under the knife.

Why choose injectables?

The most common salon based cosmetic procedures come in the way of injectable treatments, such as Botox or Dermal Fillers. There’s no surgery involved, as all the treatments are delivered via needle. Botox anti wrinkle injections can offer a long lasting solution for a range of issues such as lines and wrinkles, while Dermal Fillers can be used to reduce wrinkles, sculpt or enhance certain features such as lips.

Are Botox and Dermal Fillers safe?

We all know someone who is a regular devote of Botox or Dermal Fillers. It seems that some celebrities also can’t get enough (we are looking at you Kardashian’s…), but there have been some high profile horror stories over the years that may get you thinking twice.

Studies have shown that both are incredibly safe to use, indeed Botox is used regularly by medical professionals for a range of uses, such as to relieve spasticity (tightness in muscles) in muscles and it can even be used to treat chronic migraines.

Like anything, you need to choose wisely when deciding on where to have your procedure done:

  • Only ever used a trained professional and don’t be shy about asking for proof of any qualifications and accreditations.
  • Make sure the environment you are in is clean and hygienic – infection can be one of the most common risks.
  • Ensure you have a full consolation with your therapist before going ahead with any treatments. Be sure to talk through your medical history, expectations, timeframes and be honest with any allergies or concerns. Cosmetic enhancements are not suitable for everyone, so it’s imperative you have a full and honest consultation before any treatments are undertaken.
  • Ask what possible side effects are and what to do if you experience them e.g. bruising can be a side effect of both procedures, but will die down naturally in a matter of days. If this is the first time you are having a procedure done, you want to know what ‘normal’ looks like.
  • If you are worried about any potential risks visit the NHS guide to cosmetic procedures.

Anti Wrinkle Injections/BOTOX

How does it work?

  • Botox temporarily relaxes the muscle being treated. This prevents the muscle from contracting and preventing further damage that may be caused by repeated movements like frowning. This helps to improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles to give a more refreshed and youthful appearance.
  • It can be used in earlier years to prevent the formation of further lines and wrinkles as well as improve the appearance of deeper ones later in life.

What areas are treated?

Commonly treated areas are:

  • The muscle of the forehead and eyes
  • The jaw
  • Armpit sweat glands
  • Outer corner of the eyebrows
  • ‘Bunny lines’ on the side of the nose
  • Neck lines
  • ‘Smokers lines’ (above the top and below the bottom lip).
  • Marionette lines (to reverse the downturned corners of the corners of the mouth)
  • ‘Pebbled’ or ‘dimpled’ chin.

Dermal Fillers

What are they and how do they work?

  • Dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in our bodies which helps provide volume to give us a youthful appearance.
  • As we age, the amount of hyaluronic acid our body produces decreases thereby giving a sunken, flattened and more square appearance.
  • Dermal fillers help replace the diminished levels of hyaluronic acid to restore volume, structure, contour and shape.

What areas are treated?

  • Lips – for volume +/- shape
  • Cheeks – for contour +/- volume
  • Nasolabial folds – ‘Nose-to-mouth’ lines
  • Marionette lines – corners of the mouth
  • Peri-oral sculpting for smoker’s lines present even at rest
  • Hands

Lip Fillers:

  • Can be used to achieve fuller lips or correct lip proportions.
  • We offer 0.5mls syringes of filler for those who would like a very subtle enhancement.
  • We generally recommend using no more than 1ml of filler per treatment and working up from that to achieve your desired look.
