What is SkinPen Microneedling?

SkinPen is the latest in microneedling technology. This FDA-approved device creates tiny micro-channels in the skin to encourage the skin’s natural ability to heal itself. During the repair phase the body produces collagen and elastin, which work to smooth and firm the skin, plumping out deep lines and improving the indented or red appearance of scars and stretch marks. This is why microneedling is also known as “collagen induction therapy”.

SkinPen is far superior than traditional dermal rollers, as it has the ability to precisely control the depth of each needle. The incredibly tiny, shallow needles can be set to create tiny holes in the skin between 0.25 and 2 millimetres deep. This ensures specific skin concerns can be targeted to achieve the best possible results. A course of 3- 6 treatments is usually recommended to rejuvenate the skin – improving skin texture, firmness, pigmentation and scarring.

How does SkinPen Microneedling work?

SkinPen is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device in the world.It causes controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s natural wound healing process, while minimizing cellular damage. The result is effective remodeling of scar tissue, while keeping the overall structure of the skin intact.

There are three phases to the wound repair process:

Phase 1: Inflammation
Piercing the skin triggers your immune system to disinfect the wounds, remove debris, increase blood flow and begin to create new tissue.

Phase 2: Proliferation
The wound is rebuilt with new granulation cells, which are part of the extracellular matrix. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops

Phase 3: Remodeling
The wound is replaced with new dermal tissues and blood vessels.

What happens during a microneedling treatment?

Following a consultation where we will discuss the procedure in detail together with your treatment aims, an anaesthetic cream will be applied. The skin is then cleansed and a thin layer of gel is applied to allow the SkinPen to glide over the skin to prevent abrasion and friction.  The needle depth is selected and treatment begins with a test pass to determine skin reaction and tolerance levels.

The SkinPen is then moved across the skin, area by area, in vertical and horizontal movements to ensure every area is treated thoroughly.
